Chaos Management:
From Physics Theory to Workplace Practicum
Nancy Hatch Woodward / Human Resource Staffing
According
to the 2007 Change Management Survey by the Society
for Human Resource Management (SHRM), 82 percent of organizations
had implemented or planned to implement new processes, products,
services and/or policies requiring organization-wide change
management initiatives during the 24 months prior to the survey.
While change management techniques are important, employers
must also maintain some semblance of continuity for their employees.
A comprehensive chaos management strategy dealing with change
and motivating employees can effectively avert chaos in the
workplace, with yourself and your team.
The workplace:
- Establish routines. Staff meetings held at a regular
times; set procedure for emergencies; standardized office
and computer filing systems, etc.
- Keep the office uncluttered as much as possible. Make
it easy to get around and find needed supplies or information.
- Make sure employees understand their role in the organization
and what their responsibilities are.
- Have a plan – future business plans, emergency plans,
and risk management plans – all help people feel more secure.
- Keep the communications flowing. Provide employees with
up-to-date information about the company to develop and
keep the trust of your staff.
Yourself:
- Stay centered and focus on what is important to you.
- Take time for yourself. Have a support network of friends
and co-workers.
- Honestly evaluate your strengths and weakness to see
what you are capable of handling and what you need help
with.
- Be adaptable to change and learn to let go of the old.
Your team:
- Set reasonable expectations and hold your staff to those
standards.
- Reward success
- Foster team collaboration
- Have an open door policy and be an active listener.
- Walk the walk.
- Understand what motivates your employees over and above
money.
Change
in the workplace can be a wild and crazy but this adversity
may also provide the challenge for us to accomplish our best
work.
