Having
great employees is necessary for any company’s success, but
keeping the best employees is often ignored. No company wants
to loose their best employees.
During booming times, when profits are more readily available,
satisfying employees by providing higher wages is an option,
however during slower economic growth; companies must get much
more creative. Organizations booming a few years ago today might
be faced with downsizing today.
History has shown repeatedly that leaders of most organizations
tend to focus on quarterly profits and only become concerned
about the needs of their employees when they leave.
Employee needs assessments need to be ongoing. Assessment should
include answers to the following questions:
- What do I need to do to enrich my present staff?
- What talent or personalities are missing from my organization
- How do I recognize the talent of our organization?
Companies that retain their best talent will be in the best
position when the economy again changes. Strategies for retaining
the best employees include;
- Hire the right people who are excited about the job and
want to be part of your growth
- Show employees you care and support them
- Trust your employees and provide them the necessary tools
to succeed
- Pay your employees what is necessary and provide options
such as Simple IRA, 401K or stock options
- Remove any and all unnecessary distractions from their
work
- Challenge employees to accomplish company goals and provide
opportunities for continued growth
- Provide meaningful recognition and help employees recognize
the value of their work
- Be accessible and show interest in what they are doing
- Have fun and make a lot of money
Finding
and keeping good people is about personality and emotional
satisfaction. Most people could be happy doing a wide variety
of work if they were working with other good people.
While money will always be a motivator, it’s not the only
thing that gets people out of bed in the morning. A pat on
the back and thank you are often the best rewards.
