7 Big time Leadership Mistakes

Don Schmitz /Human Resource Staffing

Leaders have made the same mistakes throughout history. We've all witnessed these mistakes even in our best leaders. The following leadership flaws continue to be made by many leaders today;

Fear of change
Holding on to old ways just because they've always been done that way is a sure way to lose business. This fear can occur in many forms; technology, dealing with people, the way we present the business and operating the company.

Handling Criticism
If a worker cares enough to share criticism, the least you can do is listen. Just because you're in a leadership position does not mean that you suddenly become immune to making the wrong decisions. Listen to constructive criticism and make the necessary changes.

Lack of Respect
Some leaders view fellow workers as competition and keep vital information to themselves in the hopes that they will be able to one-up their staff. Wise leaders drive team not personal objectives. If an employee does excellent work, do everything you can to facilitate that step up the ladder.

Failure to Build a Strong Team
Few leaders have the courage to surround themselves with other leaders, when they do, the mistakes are limited, the burden is lightened and the vision is realized.

Mishandling mistakes
If you fail (and you will) own up to your mistake, graciously accept criticism. If a member of your team tries a new idea and fails; don't beat them up.
Being a leader is more about living by example rather than barking orders or always trying to look like you are right. Be light-hearted and even humorous about mistakes - others will catch the drift that they are free to try and fail, too.

Lack of Honest, Clear and Consistent Communication of the Vision and Mission
Leaders help everyone in the organization ‘see' the vision, they live and breathe it. One announcement is not enough. Everyone in the organization needs constant reminders of where the organization is going and the goals and objectives to get there. If we don't remember where the organization is going, we will end up somewhere else.

Claiming Credit We Don't Deserve
The most effective method of stopping growth is claiming success undeservingly.
